Godzilla vs. Kong is a 2021 Kaiju film that will be the fourth installment in the MonsterVerse, after Godzilla: King of the Monsters in 2019. It will serve as a sequel to both King of the Monsters and Kong: Skull Island, and will be the fourth chapter in the Godzilla franchise.

Godzilla vs. Kong had a rocky development, first scheduled for May 29, 2020, then being moved up to March 13, 2020, only to be postponed again to November 20, 2020, and finally May 21, 2021. It was then pushed back to March 26, 2021, before finally arriving in American theaters on March 31, 2021. The film was also available to watch on HBO Max until April 30, 2021.

Godzilla vs. Kong pits two famous adversaries against one another in a battle for the survival of the Earth. The journey is perilous, but it eventually brings Kong and his guards to Jia, a tiny orphaned girl with whom Kong has formed an unbreakable bond of love and devotion. They find themselves in the path of an enraged Godzilla, who attacks them. All that is known about the mystery that exists deep inside the Earth's core is only the beginning.

Godzilla and Kong are currently the only active Titans on Earth in 2024, five years after fighting and killing his extraterrestrial nemesis Ghidorah for dominance in 2019. The climate on Skull Island has become unstable as a result of Ghidorah's storm combining with the storm cell that surrounds the island all the time, forcing Monarch to confine Kong inside a dome-shaped facility that simulated the island's environment, with an orphaned young Iwi girl named Jia, who is deaf and can communicate with Kong via sign language, providing him company.

When Jia pays a visit to Kong and offers him a toy, the Titan, knowing that he is stuck within the biodome, discovers this and instantly tosses a tree at him.

Following the assault, popular opinion has shifted away from Godzilla, who is no longer seen as humanity's savior. Madison Russell, now an adult and a follower of Bernie's podcast, is concerned when she hears about Godzilla's latest assault on her school. After school, she makes a failed attempt to reason with her widowed father Mark (who is serving as Monarch's director) about a probable cause of Godzilla's rampage, but he ignores everything she says, stating merely that beasts, like humans, may evolve. Later on, Madison enlists the assistance of her closest friend Josh Valentine to track down the person responsible for Godzilla's rampage and unravel the mysteries of Apex.

While Walter Simmons, Apex's founder and CEO, hires Nathan Lind, a former Monarch scientist turned Hollow Earth theorist, to assist them in their hunt for a tremendous energy source in the Hollow Earth, a subterranean planet under the Earth and the secret home of the Titans. For a while, Nathan is apprehensive about venturing into the Hollow Earth after his brother was killed by an anti-gravity field while exploring the tunnel. After Walter discloses that Apex has produced Hollow Earth Aerial Vehicles, specialized vehicles that can survive the gravity field's strain, he finally accepts.

To assist them in navigating to the Hollow Earth, Nathan travels to Skull Island and meets with his colleague, Monarch anthropological linguist and Jia's adoptive mother Ilene Andrews, with the idea of using Kong as their navigator to guide them to the energy source, as Skull Island is no longer able to contain him and allow him to survive (due to Kong's size). Though Ilene first refuses, explaining that Godzilla would come for Kong immediately upon his removal from Skull Island, she eventually agrees when Nathan convinces her that they must undertake this expedition in order to put an end to Godzilla's rampage and also find a new home for Kong.

Nathan, Ilene, Jia, and an Apex crew lead by Walter's daughter Maia board a customized boat with a barely drugged Kong locked up to keep him from escaping. On a rainy night, Kong grows unhappy and begins to tug on the shackles that restrict him, but Jia calms him down by allowing her and Kong to hold fingers in solidarity as Kong signs the word "home" much to Ilene's surprise. The following day, Ilene tells Nathan about raising Jia as her adopted daughter when violent and unpredictable storms wiped away most of the Iwi and her parents, but Jia was the sole survivor since Kong was the one who protected her, which led to the two forging a relationship.

As the Titan approaches and assaults the soldiers before capsizing the barge and almost drowning Kong and the others aboard, Jia detects Godzilla's presence via the ship's vibrations. Fortunately, Nathan unlocks Kong's shackles, enabling him to fight Godzilla beneath long enough to swim to the surface and tip the barge back on its head, sparing the passengers from drowning. Kong mounts a neighboring aircraft ship to confront Godzilla, who gets onboard to confront Kong. Before fighter aircraft distract Godzilla long enough for Kong to shove him back into the water, the two Titans trade ferocious punches. Godzilla unleashes his atomic breath from under the carrier, but Kong leaps off to avoid the impact, only for Godzilla to wrap his tail around Kong and pull him deep into the water, aiming to drown the Titan.

However, when Godzilla is stunned by depth charges, the combat is split up, allowing Kong to surface for air and re-engage the fight.

Nathan, seeing no other choice, suggests that the gang should instead turn off the power to all the ships in order to fool Godzilla into believing he destroyed them and Kong was vanquished, which finally works. Godzilla takes an inquisitive look at the decimated fleet and swims away, certain he has triumphed. Recognizing that reactivating the ships may result in Godzilla's reappearance, the party alters their plans and instead fly Kong to a Hollow Earth entrance point in Antarctica, the location of Ghidorah's initial freezing. Jia explains to Kong that his house is through the entryway, but he is averse to going.

During this time, Madison and Josh come into Bernie, who recognizes Madison as Mark's daughter and decides to assist them with their inquiry since they suspect Apex was involved in Godzilla's shift in behavior. With Bernie's help, they infiltrate the devastated Apex facility, only to discover that the "eye" Bernie had mentioned before is no longer there. As they investigate a mysterious facility deep down, the gang is mistakenly imprisoned inside and carried via an underground conduit to Hong Kong in an antigravity transport vehicle transporting Skullcrawler eggs.

In that location, the three disembark and find themselves inside a vast dark chamber, where they come across Apex's ultimate weapon, "Mechagodzilla" a mechanized counterpart of Godzilla controlled by Dr. Ishiro Serizawa's son, Walter's chief technology officer Ren Serizawa, who is also Walter's chief technology officer. As soon as Mechagodzilla is launched, Walter releases a gigantic adult Skullcrawler designated "Number 10" into the chamber in order to put the mecha's might against the Titans to the ultimate test. Madison, Josh, and Bernie are on the brink of being attacked by the Skullcrawler when it is captured and detained by Mechagodzilla, who uses a tremendous red energy beam to slice the Skullcrawler in two, enabling Madison, Josh, and Bernie to take refuge in a tiny hatch. However, because to the restrictions of the power source, the test is cut short when the mecha shuts down immediately after the conclusion of the exam.

In the next scene, it is revealed that Walter aims to harness the energy of the Hollow Earth in order to overcome Mechagodzilla's constraints. Madison then understands that Mechagodzilla is the cause for Godzilla's assault in the first place: Apex is attempting to replace him and all of the Titans in order for humans to become the Earth's apex species, which is why Godzilla attacked. When Madison and the others are trying to find an exit, they come across a room where Ren is sitting inside the severed head of Ghidorah, which has been transformed into a biological supercomputer and cockpit for Ren to control Mechagodzilla through radio waves after Apex acquired it from Alan Jonah five years ago during Godzilla's battle with Ghidorah.

The Hollow Earth has a biosphere comparable to Skull Island. Two Warbats attack them, one of which destroys one of the HEAVs while scouting the area. Kong rescues the group by killing the first Warbat and flinging its corpse onto the second, knocking it down, but it recovers and constricts itself around him, forcing him to collapse. Before smothering Kong, Nathan's team's HEAV assaulted the Warbat, enabling Kong to escape and pound the creature to death before eating its guts.

Godzilla can't fly, which is a good thing. Maia and her crew attempt to flee in their HEAV, but Kong snags it on the way out and crushes it in his hand, killing Maia and her team within.

Kong accepts Godzilla's challenge and sets off with his axe towards Hong Kong, while Ilene, Nathan, and Jia follow in their HEAV, a hole created by Godzilla's atomic breath. When Kong fights Godzilla in Hong Kong again, he gains the upper hand and shoves his axe down Godzilla's throat, preventing him from unleashing his atomic breath. Kong attacks Godzilla with his axe, but Godzilla removes and discards the axe. Kong reclaims his axe and attacks Godzilla, generating an explosion that knocks both Titans back, giving Nathan the idea that Kong had won the second round of the fight with Godzilla.

Godzilla shows pity and spares his rival's life, as though inspired by Kong's tenacity and power, before walking away, leaving Kong alive but gravely hurt, as he finally loses consciousness due to commotio cordis.

Back at the Apex headquarters, Walter enthusiastically instructs Ren to dispatch Mechagodzilla to slay Godzilla. Despite Ren's warnings not to use the new Hollow Earth energy source without first testing it, Walter dismisses his concerns and orders the mecha to be activated. At the same time, security apprehends Bernie, Madison, and Josh for breaking into Apex headquarters and transports them to Walter. Madison accuses Walter of inciting Godzilla to war and for all of this to happen in the first place, however he boldly argues that he took responsibility for allowing humans to fight back against Godzilla and the Titans.

Mechagodzilla goes berserk under the influence of both the energy source and Ghidorah's brain networks, slaying Walter with a sweep of its hand and electrocuting Ren while Walter is blinded. Ghidorah's consciousness controls Mechagodzilla, which escapes from the Apex facility under Victoria Peak Mountain in order to evade Godzilla. Before the two engage, Mechagodzilla fires a rocket barrage at Godzilla.

After waking up, Kong sees the fight between Godzilla and Mechagodzilla before meeting up with Jia, who attempts to persuade Kong that Godzilla isn't truly his adversary. Kong eventually agrees. However, after Kong has continued to watch Godzilla being defeated by Mechagodzilla for some time, Jia discloses to him the truth, revealing that it is the robot, not Godzilla, who is the "real" adversary. After a brief moment of denial, Kong ultimately accepts and sets aside his resentment before entering the fight to assist Godzilla in reattaching his severed limb.

As much as the Titans try to unite and change the tide, the robot proves to be too powerful for them. It is revealed that Kong had previously lost his axe when fighting Godzilla, and he reclaims it from the ruins and tries to use it against Mechagodzilla, but his weapon is rendered ineffectual by the robot's tail drill. With nothing left to do, Bernie takes out a flask of vodka and suggests that they all go out for a drink. The flask Bernie had been holding was snatched by Josh, who had an idea and poured the contents of the flask on the control panel, causing Mechagodzilla to halt and enabling Godzilla and Kong the time to recover.

Madison re-introduces Mark to Josh and Bernie, who are delighted to see Mark and invite him into his program to discuss the Monarch facility in Roswell. Godzilla appears out of nowhere, prompting Kong to pick up his axe and continue the fight. Godzilla does not attack, instead staring Kong down. Kong lowers his axe, thereby ending the war between his and Godzilla's species. Godzilla and Kong are now on equal footing, and Godzilla returns to the water calmly, with Kong and everyone else observing.
